Having Trouble Building Your Business? GO PRO!

eric

How long have you been working your business? How much success has you seen so far? For a few, much success, for others some success but still struggling and for others, absolutely no success. Why is that? Do you think its the way you are marketing? Do you think its the company you represent?

Let me tell you something, the cold hard fact is this industry is NOT a hobby, its actually a profession. A person needs to learn the skills it takes to master that profession. This goes for any industry. If you a person is in the medical profession, they need to learn what it takes to master that profession. You wouldn’t want a person right out of med school operating on you would you? Probably not because they haven’t mastered their profession!

You see a lot of people get into the network marketing industry thinking they will find that 1 person that will absolutely explode their business, when in reality it just doesnt happen. You might as well play the lotto, because its the same mentality. Getting involved in Network Marketing with that goal in mind will bring you nothing but let downs and discouragement and you’ll probably wind up quitting. Think about it.

Now if you chose to get involved in this industry with the goals of creating an incredible income, becoming a better person and ultimately working for yourself and managing your own business then you are on the right track! It takes skill to master this profession. You will change as a person. Your thought patterns will change, your goals will change and ultimately your actions will change and you will succeed without a doubt.

With that being said, I very rarely show our team something that costs money because I know just how valuable the mighty dollar is and there are a lot of “gurus” out there that quite frankly are garbage.

I have been following (like some of you have I’m sure) a real network marketing professional. His name is Eric Worre. Eric has been in the industry since 1988 and has grown to produce some of the most life changing information to help others in the industry. Eric had his share of ups and downs just like every single person in our industry experiences. He never quit. He never backed down. He simply learned from those experiences and became a better man, friend, husband and networker.

There are endless books out there that are recommend to us on a daily basis that have some real fantastic information in them, more life life changing information. Eric’s book “Go Pro” is something that I dont just recommend, but rather STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING and GET THIS BOOK NOW! :)

Wow look at that, I must be serious, I used all caps! well I am serious. Im dead serious. Every single person that is in the industry or looking to learn more about this amazing industry should READ THIS BOOK. Its less than 200 pages and is an easy read. The information will help you so much, I cant even put it into words. I bought the book a few days ago and could’nt put it down! You will find yourself smiling, agreeing, laughing and learning through the entire thing!
The book is less than $10 but to me, the information inside it is worth more than $1000! As you build your team/organization, I recommend you get everyone to read it too. I’m sure you will agree once you start digging into it.

15 Tips for Crazy Good Facebook Marketing

15 Tips for Crazy Good Facebook Marketing

Everyone, absolutely everyone, seems to be using Facebook now. According to Facebook’s own statistics, people spend more than 700 billion minutes monthly on the platform. Wow!

Therefore, it’s essential that your company explore ways that your audience segments are using the social networking platform and develop a corresponding plan. Too many companies merely configure a Facebook Page, randomly post to it until they get bored, and then leave it to gather dust for months at a time.

What would it mean to your business if you instead developed a clear Facebook Marketing strategy and then executed on it with precision? What would it mean to your business if you thrilled your prospective clients on Facebook? The potential marketing opportunity on Facebook is tremendous for many businesses, and quite possibly for yours!

It’s not that Facebook replaces your other forms of marketing. But your prospective customers ARE spending time somewhere. And you want to connect with them and increase the time they spend with your brand. And so if they are on Facebook, and if they are on Facebook A LOT, it behooves you to develop a plan to interact with them on Facebook in a way that adds value to their experience.

To that end, here are 15 ways to better Facebook Marketing for your business:

1. Decide Why You Have a Facebook Page

As with any marketing vehicle, to maximize returns for your business you want to understand why you are doing the marketing in the first place, define your marketing goals, and develop a corresponding strategy. Your audience may value Facebook as a customer service vehicle for your business. In other cases, it might be an appropriate content or news source. In other cases, an appropriate sales source. In other cases, your fans may just want to “talk” with you and feel a part of it all. Align your Page to your strategy, and define associated success metrics.

2. Create Custom Tabs

When you start your Facebook Page for your business, your Page has a standard set of “tabs,” including a Wall where posts and comments are published and an Info tab with general information about your company. You can extend the capabilities of your Facebook Page by creating custom tabs. For example, the StartupNation Facebook Page includes a “Welcome” tab  with links to various types of content and products, and with a promotion for the currently-running Leading Moms in Business Competition. You can actually submit your entry through another custom tab. (Note: The competition has now ended, and so this particular tab has been replaced with a Twitter tab and an email newsletter sign-up tab.)

3. Edit Your Tab Order

Your Facebook tabs appear in vertical order on the left side of your Page. Right under the list of tabs is a small “Edit” option. You can use this to customize the order of your tabs (outside of the Wall and Info tabs). This is useful especially if you want a certain tab towards the top, or all the way at the bottom of the list so that it stands out more. With the StartupNation Facebook tabs, for example, the “Welcome” tab has been placed just below the Wall and Info tabs, and the Leading Moms in Business Competition tab at the bottom of the list. (Note: Since the time of this writing, an email newsletter sign-up tab is now placed at the bottom of the list, given that the competition has ended.)

4. Post More Than Once a Century

We’ve all seen them. Facebook Pages where the business was overly excited when setting up their Page, with 7 posts the first day, and then no more posts the following three months. Just as with any marketing for your business, if you are going to do it, then do it well. By ignoring your Facebook Page for months at a time, you send a message to your audience that you just don’t care. So decide if a Facebook Page is something your business needs, and if the answer is yes then at least stick to some type of posting schedule.

5. Use Facebook Ads

Paid advertising in Facebook is a great opportunity for your business in that Facebook enables you to target your audience for your ads in many ways. You can specify the age group, gender, and geographic area of those that will see your ads. Not only that, you can specify the specific interests of your audience as broadly or as narrowly as you’d like. You can set your bid price and campaign budget, and test as many ad images, headlines and ad copy as your heart desires. And if you decide that your campaign is just not working, you can stop the campaign immediately, thus lowering your risk of overspending on your campaign.

6. Get ‘Em to Sign Up

Giving your audience something of value in exchange for a registration or sign-up can be valuable to your business, as it enables you to have an ongoing conversation with those who have expressed interest. So, hold a competition or sweepstakes, or simply offer a sign-up form for something of value in return.

7. Send an Update

Facebook Page Administrators are able to send messages to everyone who “Likes” their Page. So when you have something of value to let your fans know about, send out an update and make them aware. Just be very prudent with the frequency of this technique. Send stuff to your fans only when it really matters.

8. Have a Dialogue

If someone takes the time to comment on your Facebook Wall, answer them. Think about it, if someone calls your business, you answer the phone and you answer their questions. Same with email. Same with a form submission from your website. And it’s the same with Facebook.

9. Go Beyond Your Page

Facebook now enables you to navigate through Facebook “as a Page.” Therefore, you can post to other Facebook Pages that you “Like.” (Note, this is only for Pages for which permissions have been configured to allow third-party posts.) Just be extra careful with this, as you should post to another Facebook Page ONLY when you have something of true value to add. And be very respectful of the Page owner. DO NOT SPAM. It’s just bad marketing.

10. Use It as a Content Platform

Use Facebook as a publishing platform and as a channel for extending the reach of your content. If you write a blog post, update your Facebook Page and let the world know about it and have access to it. Not everyone is going to visit your blog everyday. The more that you can write once and publish in multiple locations, the more likely that your valuable content is going to reach your audience.

11. Make it “Shareable”

What can you offer your audience that’s of value? That they would want to tell their colleagues about? Facebook is all about sharing and interacting with others. If you truly focus on giving as much value to your prospective customers as possible, they will return the favor by letting others know and providing their own network with the opportunity to experience such value. For example, this could be an eBook, an exclusive offer, a cool competition, etc. It can even be just deliciously awesome content.

12. Make Some Stuff Exclusive

We humans are funny. We often want what’s just out of reach. (Heck, it makes life more fun that way!) So dangle something of value to your prospective audience but make them “Like” your Page in order to get it. They win. You win. Everyone wins. For an example of this, with the Leading Moms in Business Competition tab in the StartupNation Facebook Page, prospective entrants can get a free eBook jam-packed with advice for mom entrepreneurs as long as they first “Like” the StartupNation Page on their way to entering the competition.

7 Unconventional Ways To Motivate Yourself

lion

We need new ways of finding motivation, and here’s 7 of them.

When it comes to motivating and pushing yourself, it’s usually filled with cliché advice. “Don’t give up”, “Get over it” or “Always look on the bright side of life”. These are a few examples.

While they’re all correct at the root, conventional thinking like this just doesn’t cut it anymore. In fact, they are so trite and used so often that the message is lost to most of us. Heck, it even pisses people off, which is the total opposite of what it’s supposed to do.

The 7 Unconventional Ways Of Thinking

1. “Welcome the pain”

Yep! Welcome the pain. Accept it willingly.

There’s a saying, “Pain is weakness leaving the body”, which means to say, no matter how tough or how much pain you’re feeling, you’re going to emerge stronger after that. So don’t be afraid when things get tough. Push yourself to accept what is coming instead and know that you’re going to grow from it.

2. “Look forward to feeling good”

This is my main, personal method in motivating myself. I believe that when you work hard, the feeling you get after that is the reward. The sense of satisfaction and accomplishment is the backbone of it all.

The fitness mantra, “Do you want to be sore, or sorry later?” works the same way.

So only aim for the feeling. Ask yourself how you want to feel later only. Forget about how you’d feel in between.

3. “Stop moving forward, take a step back instead”

Stop progressing altogether for a second. Just stop.

Take a step back instead.

It may seem paradoxical, but you know what it can do for you? You’ll be able to gain more clarity.

Go back for a second, re-evaluate your goals and remember your why. This effectively gives you the motivation to move forward.

And you’ll make better progress.

4. “Quit”

Or better yet, quit. Give up altogether on what you’re doing.

This requires some reflection and evaluation though. Sometimes quitting is the best thing you can do. You just have to realize that what you’re doing isn’t helping you anymore.

And after you quit, you’re free to do whatever you want as you’re no longer trapped by whatever it is which held you down.

5. ”Have a really good break”

This kind of goes hand in hand with point (2): Look forward to feeling good.

I find that a lot of people have lousy breaks. They don’t do themselves the favour they deserve. E.g. Instead of recognizing that a break time is a time to recharge, they end up being completely idle by doing mindless things like surfing Facebook, Twitter or watching random YouTube videos they aren’t even interested in watching in the first place. That is dead time. It does not help you at all and before you know it, you’re back to work.

6. “Failure is your best friend”

Or, failure is your ally.

Embrace failure, for it will give you the best and most meaningful lessons you actually need to move forward. That being said, failure is not the end.

When you don’t get the results you want, it doesn’t mean it’s over. Instead, you’re given the opportunity to learn and grow the fastest way possible.

7. ”Have fun”

Whatever it is in life, just have fun. Make that your sole aim.

Don’t take life so seriously. Laugh at your mistakes. Never sweat the small stuff. Just have fun, and be thankful for what you have, and that everything is going to be okay anyway.

11 Creative Ways To Get More Twitter Followers

get more twitter follower

It’s natural, as a user of Twitter, to want to get more Twitter followers. There are several extremely effective methods that you can you use to attract more Twitter followers to follow you, which you can start implementing today.

In this revealing and informative article we will look at 10 of the best and most effective techniques to get more Twitter followers. Apply just a few of them and you will rapidly double, or even triple, your devoted following of Twitter fans!

How To Get More Twitter Followers

Strategy #1 – Use A Great Twitter Profile Photo!

When people scan through the list of potential Tweeters to follow one of the first things they will see is your profile photo. As such, you want to make sure that your photo is unique, interesting and eye-catching.

With a great photo your likelihood of attracting new twitter followers is significantly increased. It is also a good idea to change your photo regularly as this keeps things fresh and exciting.

Strategy #2 – Have An Interesting Biography!

Your biography is, by necessity, short and so you only get a few lines to make an impact. Therefore, you want to write something that inspires people to follow you. Whether by signalling the topics and themes your Tweets are generally going to be about or by engendering a little curiosity and mystique, this brief bio needs to be impactful, noteworthy and able to inspire people to follow you.

Strategy #3 – Tweet On A Regular Basis!

Unless you are already extremely famous, it is almost impossible to build a sizable following without Tweeting on a regular basis. You should ideally aim to send a Tweet out at least once a day, if not twice or even more. Being visible to your followers gives your Tweets more chance of being Re-Tweeted and shared which will further increase your number of followers.

You can also use BufferApp to pre-load tweets and schedule them in if you are going on a holiday or have a jam-packed week of exams ahead of you. This is a must if you strive to keep your tweets consistent.

Strategy #4 – Tweet Interesting, Newsworthy Information!

If you Tweet thought-provoking ideas and information then you exponentially increase your chance of being Re-Tweeted. Since Re-Tweeting is, undoubtedly, one of the easiest ways to gain more visibility among potential followers you need to make this a key part of your strategy.

Strategy #5 – Choose Your Hashtags Wisely!

If you want to get your Tweets in front of other people with related interests then putting a bit of thought into your Hashtags can pay off handsomely! Think of something relevant that is likely to be shared or might even trend and you can be onto a real winner.

Strategy #6 – Don’t Be Overly Promotional!

Perhaps the quickest way to lose a whole bunch of previously loyal followers is by promoting too heavily. Twitter is not designed to be overly commercial in terms of content and affiliate links so you should keep any form of advertising to an absolute minimum.

Strategy #7 – Request A Re-Tweet!

This tactic won’t always work but, when it does, it can be extremely effective. The key idea is to get either a celebrity or a key Tweeter in your niche to Re-Tweet your message. If you are successful with this then you can get your message seen by potentially hundreds of thousands or even millions of people. That sort of visibility can increase your total of followers incredibly quickly!

Also if you know that your tweet is quality content, it doesn’t hurt to ask your community once in a while if they can RT your link or tweet. This has actually proven to increase your chances of a Re-Tweet by 2X. Just don’t over do it on this request.

Strategy #8 – Follow Similar Tweeters!

Another effective strategy that always works is to follow people with similar interests. When you follow someone who is a good match in terms of hobbies, interests and opinions, there is a high likelihood they will follow you back. If you do this enough times you can build up a very large Twitter following using only this one strategy.

You could use TweetAdder which is great for finding people to follow who have followed your role models or competition.

Strategy #9 – Add Your Profile To Twitter Directories!

Strange as it may sound, but, some people literally trawl through the main Twitter Directories to find people to follow. It doesn’t take long to add your profile to the main Twitter Directories, such as JustTweetIt.com and WeFollow.com, and it can boost your following significantly over time.

Strategy #10 – Tweet Neat Pictures To Your Followers!

For some unknown reasons, Tweeting pictures works spectacularly well on Twitter. If your pictures are at all interesting or comment worthy then you will effortlessly generate a lot of Re-Tweets. This increases your visibility and inevitably means you will gain more followers. As such, you should make this a regular part of your Twitter strategy.

Strategy #11 – Stay Engaged

You have to stay engaged with your followers. If I go to your Twitter page and you are just writing about yourself and you are not “@replying” to your  followers then chances are I am not going to be interested in connecting with you. I would consider you as the type of guy who goes to a party and only talks about himself and is not willing to interact with anyone else or even ask how they are doing. People want to see that there is a real human being on the other side of the keyboard that they can get an honest answer or interaction out of.

You want proof on how the @reply works. check this link out and also follow @garyvee, Gary Vaynerchuk has millions of followers and interacts with nearly anyone who reaches out too him.

Summing Up

There are a number of ways to quickly and easily increase the number of your Twitter followers. To maximize your results you should use consider using these strategies in combination. Pick a few of the 10 strategies outlined above, start applying them today and you will soon see amazing results. Good luck with your Tweeting!

7 Ways to Push Past Your Limits and Realize Your Goals

BXP135660

1. Find someone to help push you

Just that little bit of support encouraging you to keep going in the face of resistance can mean so much. Having someone on your side can counter-balance any negative thinking you might have. They can tell you to do more and push you into doing things outside of your comfort zone.

2. Take on a little more than you think you can

Pushing past your limits means taking on newer, progressively harder challenges. If you’re not challenging yourself to do bigger and better things on a regular basis, you’re only working within the confines of what you already can do. That’s a sure-fire way to stay exactly where you are and make little to no progress.

3. Imagine reaching your next level

Working on your dreams or goals can take a lot of focus. Where you put that focus matters a lot. You might know where you are and where you were, but do you know where you need to go? Imagine that next level for reaching your dreams and take steps to get there.

4. Look at how others reached where you want to go

Whatever your goals are, there are probably others who have had them and succeeded in reaching them. Look to them for clues on what they did to push past their limits on their way to success. You’ll probably find a lot of great information from examining the path they took.

5. Inspire yourself to action

Find something that inspires you to reach your goals. Whether it is a video, quote or thought that inspires you to succeed, it should be something that fills you with passion and drive to get things done. Inspiration can be a powerful motivational tool.

6. Don’t stop until exhaustion

I’ve been known to push myself so hard that I reach exhaustion. Each time I work out, I try to lift with more weight. I’ve worked on this blog for endless hours to get the HTML formatting and design just the way I want them to be. These tasks exhausted me, but they were completely necessary for me to reach my goals.

7. Work on your weaknesses

Where there are weaknesses, there are limits. Think about a marathon runner. They won’t be able to train very well for a marathon if they can’t find a good running stride or have bad nutrition. These are big areas of weakness that just makes training harder. Without correction, your weaknesses will limit how far you can take yourself.

10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Giving Up on Your Dream

give up

“Commitment in the face of conflict produces character.” ~Unknown

We all face obstacles in pursuing our goals, whether they’re professional or personal.

We think we’re on the right track but realize we’ve chosen the wrong approach. We’re enthusiastic and hard-working, but our support system disintegrates when we need them the most. We’re just about to make significant progress when we run out of time or funding.

Tenacious as we may be, we all have our breaking points—that moment when the potential rewards stop justifying the effort. Usually that’s the hump that separates your best shot and your best reality.

Before you throw in the towel and go back to something safe and far less taxing, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Why did you want to pursue this goal to begin with—and has anything changed?

You had a good reason for committing to this plan. Maybe you visualized a financially free future once you started this new business, or you realized you’d live longer and healthier if you lost 40 pounds.

Odds are you still want those things as much as you did before; you just stopped believing you could have them because your attempts have yet to yield results. Now you have to ask yourself: if you push through the discomfort will it be worth it in the end?

2. Have you been operating with too much information?

With so much information at our fingertips on the good ole World Wide Web, it’s easy to overwhelm yourself with more knowledge than you can apply. You read e-books and blogs, participate in teleconferences and coaching sessions, and join user forums to talk about getting things done.

One of two things happen as a result: you spend more time planning to act then acting; or you devote minimal energy to multiple plans instead of committing to one solid approach. Instead of drowning in all the data, why not narrow it down and start again from a less overwhelming space?

3. Did you set a smart goal? SMART goals are:

Specific—you know exactly what your world will look like when you achieve this goal.
Measurable—you have a specific plan to mark your progress as you go.
Attainable—you have the attitude and aptitude to make your goal reality.
Realistic—you’re willing and able to do the required work.
Time-bound—you’ve set a concrete timeframe for completion to create a sense of urgency.
If you didn’t set a SMART goal, you may have set yourself up for failure. How can you possibly make something happen if you don’t know exactly what you want, or didn’t really believe you could do it? Are you really willing to walk away when you didn’t give yourself every opportunity to succeed?

4. What’s the worst that will happen if you keep going and don’t reach your goal?

Often when I want to turn around it’s because I’m afraid of failing—afraid other people will be disappointed in me or judge me, or afraid I’ll have wasted my time. In all reality, no one ever judges us like we judge ourselves.; and we always grow and learn through the process of striving, regardless of what we attain.

If you don’t keep going, you’ll never know how far you could have gone, and you’ll miss out on being the person you’d become through the effort itself. If you do keep going, well, it’s like this quote: “Shoot for the moon, for even if you miss you’ll land among the stars.”

5. Are you afraid of succeeding?

One of my biggest problems is that I don’t like responsibility. There are many things I’d like to do, but I resist because I don’t want the power to impact, hurt, or disappoint other people. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have dreams—it’s just that I’m just scared of what achieving them will entail.

If you can relate to this feeling, perhaps you’ll respond well to the mantra I’ve been repeating: great power comes with great responsibility, but it also brings great rewards. If you play it safe, you won’t hurt or disappoint anyone, but you also won’t help or inspire anyone. And equally important, you won’t help or inspire yourself.

6. Are you acting on impulse or emotion instead of thinking things through?

Sometimes our emotions give us hints about what we want and what we should do, but other times they’re just responses to stress, and maybe even indications we’re on the right track. If you act in that moment of intense emotion—be it anger, fear, or frustration—you may regret it once the wave has passed.

So sit back. Take note of what you’re feeling. Feel it fully, without judging it or yourself. Then act when you’ve gotten to the other side. At least then you’ll know you made your decision in a moment of peace and clarity.

7. Would you enjoy giving a loved one the honest explanation for why you gave up?

And I mean honest. Would you like telling your daughter, I stopped trying to quit smoking because cigarettes are more important to me than having more golden years to spend with you? Would it be fun to tell your mother I decided not to go to school because I’d rather spend time with my boyfriend of three months then prepare for a career that will ensure I won’t end up jobless and homeless?

If you lay out it out like this, odds are you’ll realize you had a really good reason for doing this difficult thing, and no matter how challenging the process is, it’s worth plowing ahead.

8. Would your life be better if you gave up on this goal?

This may not sound motivational, but sometimes giving up is actually good thing. Perhaps you set a completely unrealistic goal, and its pursuit is filling you with a constant set of inadequacy and anxiety. Or maybe the goal isn’t in yours or your family’s best interest, and it’s better to get out before you invest so much time it’s near impossible to walk away.

You could easily use this as a justification to delude yourself, so think about it carefully. Is this goal really a good thing, when you weigh all the consequences of its fulfillment?

9. How much have you already put in?

A concept studied in social psychology called “the sunk cost principle” indicates the more we’ve invested in something, the less likely we are to prematurely walk away.

How invested are you? How much money and time have you devoted? How many sacrifices have you made? Are you really willing to chalk it all up as a loss because you’re not feeling confident in your abilities?

10. What would you tell someone else if they were in your shoes?

Would you tell your best friend to throw in the towel because she can’t possibly reach her goal? Or would you practice your finest motivational speech and help her see what you see in her potential? Unless you’re secretly a frenemy who hopes she fails in life odds are you’d push her to be her best—so why not push yourself?

It may sound kind of cheesy, but you need to be your own best friend. You, more than anyone in this world, deserve your belief and motivation.

Avoid the Bright Shiny Object Syndrome by Staying the Course

Bright Shiny Object syndrome can undo your business before it gets going

warning

One of the top sabotages of any online business is the bright shiny object syndrome.

What is that?

It is when you work for a while trying to build your business.

You are marketing.

Studying your products.

Watching the webinars.

Tuning into the calls.

Fully engaged….

….and then your email goes off and your eye catches a subject line that makes you ponder.

“Want to earn $200 per day with a $7 investment?”

“This product will explode your traffic by 1,000%.”

“Stop prospecting and follow this system that will drop leads into your auto responder every minute of every day.”

I get these all the time.

I am on several lists and it just comes with the territory.

Many call this bright shiny object syndrome.

Bright Shiny Object Syndrome will destroy your focus

I am guilty of this.

You are focused on your work….

….and then someone sends you a link.

The link promises to take all your troubles away.

It is wrapped in this bright shiny object packaging….

….that just calls out “click me.”

And you do.

And 45 minutes later, you are watching some other opportunity that promises you the world.

You can’t allow yourself to fall for this trap.

Focus is your number one friend in this business….

….and “Bright Shiny Object” syndrome is your worst enemy.

Why must you avoid the bright shiny object trap

The reason you must avoid this trap is simple.

If you jump from opportunity to opportunity, over an over again, you never learn your business.

How can you make money if you are constantly in the learning phase?

Every new product launch promises this or that.

They come every 90 days or so.

And do you know why?

Because most people don’t stay with anything longer than 90 days.

And with every new launch, comes another new product to learn.

More lost focus.

More lost productivity.

And does your income grow?

I will let you be the judge of that.

So you are constantly starting over and over.

It is no way to run a business.

By staying the course you will undo the bright shiny object syndrome

You simply have to stay the course.

Bright shiny object syndrome is a cancer to your business.

There is a lot of nonsense out there.

This nonsense can distract you and keep you from the breakthroughs in your business.

So stay focused and keep working.

And ‘stay the course’ and you will overcome the bright shiny object syndrome.

The Federal Trade Commission and three state attorneys general announced Monday that they shut down a national multilevel marketing company they called a “global pyramid scheme” that rewards people for recruiting others.

Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing of Lexington, Ky., and its top two executives were sued by the FTC and the attorneys general of Kentucky, North Carolina and Illinois for “unfair and deceptive actions” that violated state and federal laws. Among the charges: Misrepresenting that the company is “a good way for average people to make substantial income and achieve financial independence.”

“Today’s actions are the beginning of the end for one of the most prolific pyramid schemes operating in North America,” said Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway.

The headquarters and a warehouse for Lexington, Ky.-based Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing were raided Monday morning and the contents confiscated by a receiver appointed by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The receiver, Robb Evans, and his firm met with FHTM employees today and sent most home.

The multilevel company was the subject of a USA TODAY investigation in October 2010, which reported top FHTM representatives for the company often told their rags-to-riches stories in videotaped meetings, a book written by President Paul Orberson and marketing materials.

Joanne McMahon, a national sales manager speaking at a training session that USA TODAY attended at a September 2010 FHTM conference, said it is people who can’t afford the fee to join Fortune who need the company the most.

Orberson is a prominent figure in Kentucky, where the University of Kentucky built a Paul Orberson Football Office Complex in 2002 after he made a $1.6 million contribution. In an interview at the 2010 conference that USA TODAY attended, Orberson defended his company against allegations that it is a pyramid scheme: “If it were illegal, I wouldn’t be standing here.”â??

Some employees familiar with FHTM’s business dealings, assets and technology will be kept on to assist the receiver in identifying the assets and how the business ran.

The company claimed to have 160,000 independent representatives selling products and services including Dish Network subscriptions, vitamins, cosmetics and security systems. Dish told Montana state regulators that it didn’t have a relationship with FHTM. FHTM once claimed to have relationships with other well-known brands, including Citibank and Travelocity.

Multilevel or “network” marketers pay commissions to salespeople for the products they sell, on products sold by others they recruit and often bonuses when their teams reach a certain level of sales. The Direct Selling Association, which represents companies that have multilevel compensation plans, estimates there were 15.6 million “direct” salespeople in 2011.

According to the lawsuit against FHTM, its “complicated and convoluted compensation plan” ensures most people make little or no money.

“The fact that they targeted people who just wanted to better themselves in this economy is unconscionable,” Conway said in an interview.

More than 85% of the compensation paid is from recruiting new members, the complaint said. The compensation plan is designed so the majority of people will spend more than they earn. As Conway noted in an interview, about 90% of people made less than $15 a year, yet were asked to spend about $1,500 a year on products and membership fees.

The judge issued a temporary restraining order against the company, which requires FHTM to stop any pyramid operations. Receiver Evans will report back to the court about its findings after his firm reviews FHTM’s finances and business model. The FTC and states are seeking permanent injunctive relief prohibiting the operations of FHTM, along with civil penalties, damages and restitution for consumers.

Conway says he hopes the estimated $250 million in damages will help repay many of the “people taken in by the company.”

Violation of Kentucky’s pyramid law is a felony, said Conway, who will refer the case to Kentucky’s commonwealth attorney in Lexington for possible criminal prosecution.

FHTM’s “Presidential ambassadors” averaged $1,240,992 in income a year, yet made up just 0.07% of the company’s representatives, according to a financial disclosure Fortune filed as part of its April 2010 settlement with Montana. The statement also showed 30% of Fortune representatives make nothing, and 54% of those with earnings averaging just $93 a month, before costs. More than 99% of those who make money earn less than $31,524 a year.

FHTM could not immediately be reached for comment.

How will FHTM closing affect you?

Well unless you’re apart of FHTM (Fortune High Tech Marketing) then this really won’t affect you, directly. However, the company has been around for a while and has had a number of successful distributors who were apart of the company. These PEOPLE are now without an opportunity and definitely wondering what to do next.

I just ask that you respect people, and while yes its cool to offer your opportunity. Please do so in a very respectable manner.

What to do if you were in FHTM (Fortune High Tech Marketing)

My recommendation is to not get discouraged on the industry. But understand a few dynamics that led to the issues with FHTM. Alot is changing with businesses and especially in the network marketing world. Look at some of the other companies out here but look for some with VERY solid leadership, corporate and in the field.
